ABOUT

Introduction
The CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) was established in the 1950s for the purpose of serving as a forum for sharing research findings on a variety of construction-related topics. CIB W99, Working Commission on Safety and Health on Construction Sites, was founded in 1995. W99 will host the 2008 International Conference with the theme “Evolution of and Directions in Construction Safety and Health” in Gainesville, Florida, USA. [top]

Invitation
The Organizing Committee is honored to invite practitioners and researchers from developed, developing and underdeveloped nations to address fundamental issues related to the successful implementation of programs and practices in construction safety and health. [top]

Objectives
The broad objectives of the conference are:

  • To identify the challenges presented by safety and health concerns in the construction industry in countries at various stages of development;
  • To discuss how the construction industry, private enterprises, and individual practitioners can meet these challenges;
  • To identify priority areas for research and policy initiatives;
  • To foster, encourage and promote collaborative research in the application of integrated construction safety and health throughout the lifecycle of the design, construction, occupancy and eventual demolition of buildings and other facilities;

The organizers aim to bring together practitioners, academics, administrators and researchers representing contracting organizations, educational institutions, government agencies, consulting enterprises, and other construction related organizations from all over the world. [top]

Conference Theme
The conference topics are organized around the conference theme of Evolution of and Directions in Construction Safety and Health. [top]

The papers can present various types of information, including information on construction practices that have successfully addressed safety and/or health challenges and research that brings enlightenment about factors that drive or hinder the achievement of safety on construction sites. Papers may also address emerging problems that must be addressed in the areas of construction safety and health. In accord with the theme of the conference, the goal is to highlight how the construction industry has changed and how it may change in the future. [top]

Abstracts and Papers
Authors are invited to submit abstracts in English of not more than 200 words for peer review by the scientific and technical committee by not later than November 1, 2007. Each abstract should indicate the main topic of the conference which the proposed paper will address. Give the name and full contact details of the author to be contacted concerning the paper. Abstracts will be reviewed for relevance to the themes and objectives of the conference; originality of subject matter; likely academic rigor of the proposed paper; and likely contribution to knowledge, or practical relevance, of the proposed paper.
